Our Approach
About Us
South Jordan Montessori came into being as a result of a teacher’s inquisitive mind. Owner, Carol Hansen, a former third/fourth grade teacher entered a Montessori classroom for the first time in 1988 and wondered why there were so many boxes with lids on the shelves. What was in them? That exposure lead to a desire to learn more about the Montessori method. She found employment in a Montessori classroom, received training from Montessori World Educational Institute and received her early childhood certificate. Carol started her own school in 1991 with a brief 3 year hiatus where she worked in a 6-9 classroom while taking training for her lower elementary certificate which she received from Utah Montessori Teacher Educational Program. After receiving her certificate and with encouragement from her daughter, Maryann who was also taking her early childhood training, she again opened her school in the lower portion of her one and a half story New England style home.
South Jordan Montessori offers a unique combination of giving children their first formal educational training in a loving, positive home environment. The school has separate entrances for students, three large classrooms with ample natural light, a stone staircase into a rock garden that leads to a large campus of swings, bike path, playground, hen house, orchard, flower and vegetable gardens and green grass everywhere.
With a limited enrollment and a low student teacher ratio, children are able to flourish and grow at their own pace with the help of dedicated teachers who have a deep abiding love for each child and how the Montessori method and curriculum can help to develop a lifelong love for learning while building self-esteem and a sense of community as students grow and learn together.
Our Philosophy
South Jordan Montessori School encourages and promotes the intellectual, physical and social development of children. The Montessori philosophy emphasizes the development of the child in a carefully prepared and controlled environment. A prepared environment is one in which the child is able to develop freely at his or her own pace, unhindered in the spontaneous unfolding of his/her natural capacities, through the manipulation of a graded series of self-correcting materials designed to stimulate the senses and one’s thinking, progressing from concrete to abstract skills. Responsible freedom and inner self-discipline are encouraged.
We endeavor to emphasize the joy of learning and to help the child develop a positive self-image. The social development of the children in the class is greatly emphasized. It takes place in a natural manner as the children learn to respect each other and become affectionate and cooperative. The school does not discriminate by race, color or creed. All children are welcome to enroll.
